New Catalog!

Portraits 101: Available on Blurb.com

Portraits: 101 is the catalog of my new series of digital prints. They were made by collecting the first one hundred and one images found while performing Google images search for particular celebrities, artists, sports figures, politicians, or spiritual leaders.

By combining all of the 101 images, the portraits become time-based, abstract, meta-portraits that reinforce the collective idea or the essence of the publicly held image of that person.

Stephanie Syjuco's project at Frieze 2009 is mention in the book:

Werner, Henry. Modern Art For Sale: Die Bedeutendsten Kunstmessen Der Welt

Palmedia Publishing 2010

www.feymedia.com

"Stephanie Syjuco set up a parasitic workshop in which a small group of artists made bootleg copies of other works exhibited in the fair. The artists used basic and inexpensive materials and worked in a gallery stand at the fair in full view of visitors. The copies were displayed in an adjacent gallery stand. Copystand: an autonomous manufacturing zone drew on Syjuco’s recent projects involving approximate copies: crocheted branded luxury goods, cardboard replicas of Charlotte Perriand furniture and body doubles."

"Stephanie Syjuco’s playful yet purposeful whacks at art-world hierarchies usually lead her to re-create iconic works out of cheapo materials (think cardboard Calders). In “Particulate Matter,” she subverts expectations by realizing designs that amateurs created in the free 3-D modeling program Google SketchUp."

"The whimsical sculptures in Stephanie Syjuco’s exhibition “Particulate Matter: Things, Thingys, Thingies” are based on designs that were never meant to have a material form. "Syjuco’s handmade versions of objects designed by users of the free 3-D modeling program Google SketchUp exist somewhere between the bootleg, the copy, and the translation. Modeled from online designs that seem to lack value or utility, Syjuco’s refashioned versions explore the handmade in the digital-era of design, uniqueness found even within the copy, and collaboration’s relationship to outsourcing, as well as labor, authorship, and value."

Sandow Birk, "An L.A. Artist's Qur'an" by Jarrett Moran
ARTLOG
September 11, 2010

In Birk's discussion of the works...

"As an artist I'm trying to make something - an illuminated manuscript - entirely by hand, tediously, as it was done centuries ago. It seems to me that this is something unique that artists can do in the world today - as opposed to working with video that can also make television shows and movies, or sound, or websites, or whatever "cutting edge" technology you want to choose."

Sandow Birk: "American Qu'ran"
By Holland Cotter

"Mr. Birk began his long-term Koran project in 2004. In a format roughly based on Persian miniatures, he has been transcribing the Muslim holy book, chapter by chapter, into rectangular compartments on sheets of paper, then filling the blank space around the boxes with paintings inspired by the words."
