Honesty at Last

The Wadsworth’s Amistad Center gets maniacal about Lincoln

Lincoln: Man, Myth and Memory
Through April 26,
Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art,
600 Main St., Hartford

“An evocative untitled installation by Travis Somerville depicts a ball and chain clamped around the neck of a plaster bust of Lincoln. This is paired with Somerville’s oil painting, “Smokey Joe on my Mind,” an image guaranteed to ruffle a few feathers. Lincoln in blackface (like Al Jolson) with a racially insensitive old-time cartoon character emerging from his forehead.”
