NEW APPOINTMENT:
Ken Goldberg is newly appointed Director of the Berkeley Center for New Media.

About Berkeley Center for New Media:
New Media from email to video blogs transform how we perceive, learn, communicate, and experience the world. What is "new" is accelerating rapidly with emerging technologies, but is deeply rooted in powerful aesthetic, social, and political forces.

Based in a public research university at the epicenter of design and information technology, The Berkeley Center for New Media (BCNM) is dedicated to exploring new media from cross-disciplinary and global perspectives that emphasize public interests. BCNM draws from diverse historical and contemporary ideas from over 100 affiliated scholars and faculty from 30 departments, including Architecture, Philosophy, Film Studies, Art History, Dance, the Schools of Engineering, Information, Journalism, Law, and the Berkeley Art Museum.

As a Center, BCNM catalyzes research and offers courses to educate future leaders. BCNM offers a Designated Emphasis in New Media for PhD candidates and has established new cross-disciplinary faculty positions. BCNM organizes meetings, symposia, and special events for researchers, industry, and the public. BCNM applies humanistic inquiry to reveal opportunities and risks associated with contemporary media. BCNM helps shape future developments by facilitating traditional modes of scholarship, hosting critical dialogues, and encouraging unorthodox artworks, designs, and experiments.
